Chapter 9

The next morning at Candyland Confections, Emma sat down in the back office at a small white desk cluttered with papers. Front and center was a new bill that made her feel miserable. She placed her hand on her forehead and stared at it, feeling overwhelmed. She knew she had to focus on getting things done for the store and preparing for Halloween, which was only a week away. Emma realized she needed to take a break and regroup before starting fresh. First, she needed to go grocery shopping.

Emma retrieved her purse from the bottom drawer of her desk and headed outside to her car. She said goodbye to Tiffany, who assured her she could lock up if Emma didn’t return in time for closing. Tiffany had been a good friend and employee for about three years, and they had known each other since high school through Lilly.

As Emma drove out of downtown Woodsville, she noticed the clouds becoming dense and gray, showing an approaching storm. Once in the parking lot of the store, she found a spot near the cart return and made her way inside, checking her phone for the grocery list. Just as she entered, she nearly collided with someone pushing their cart—Bryce.

Emma greeted him, acknowledging that they seemed to keep running into each other lately. Bryce found it a little suspicious but brushed it off, attributing it to living in a small town. They chatted briefly, and Emma asked about what had happened the previous night. Bryce expressed his concern about someone locking her in a storage room.

Emma shared her discovery of the poem with Bryce, who confirmed that he hadn’t received one. They together compared the two poems, the one from Emma’s store and the one at the library that she had found and had taken a photo of. They were identical in their calligraphy writing. He assured her that not receiving a poem didn’t make him the culprit and they went on to discuss their progress on decorations for the competition and assured each other they were on track for the big reveal.

After finishing her shopping, Emma went home since Lilly was finishing up at the store and was willing to close with Tiffany. Bryce’s comment about not being a writer lingered in Emma’s mind. With her laptop in hand, Emma did some research on him and found his social media profiles and business contact information. However, she stumbled upon an article from their childhood where Bryce had won a short story competition in the city. Emma’s heart raced as she considered the implications. If Bryce had lied about his writing ability, what else was he hiding?

Emma climbed up to her bedroom on the second floor and placed her laptop on her pale purple floral bedspread. She pondered the article and wondered about the truth behind Bryce’s claim.
